[Daisy: Where should I start? Well, there was a village here, long ago.
Then came the fur trappers. Relations were cordial at first.
One winter a ship got iced in the bay. The party was running out of food.
While the locals tried to help, the trappers grew impatient and desperate…]
Oh, I know where this is headed; Cannibalism! (aka humans eating humans)
They are fur trappers. When they get trapped by the ice, they can still set traps. They only sell the fur, that should leave enough meat to eat.
The only problem I see is that their boat will be crushed by the ice, and they have no way back to wherever it is they sell their furs.
