Reina: I know it’s probably nothing but I can’t help feeling that… I mean, sometimes you have to share the hot spring, and-
Kiro: Reina.
Reina: I’m sorry I can’t be enough for you, it’s always the same, it’s just like him…
Kiro: Reina, I think you’re taking this way too personally.
Poor Reina. I’m thinking she takes everything personally. I can’t help but wonder if she’ll ever figure out that the world isn’t all about her, and more importantly, isn’t supposed to be. She’s going to have a miserable and disappointing life if she doesn’t.
Reina’s had a rough go of it by always being rejected by her parents, so it’s likely she has some kind of severe loneliness and self-shame issues going on. I don’t think she’s that egotistical, more likely she’s just very ready to be rejected and sees it even where it doesn’t exist. That’s going to be a tough thing to overcome, even with Kiro’s help.
I don’t think Reina “knows” it’s nothing. I think she really hopes it is, but she just can’t convince herself otherwise. The last panel is great, lots of visual language going on there. Awesome work!
This makes an awful lot of sense to me too. Reina, who appears to be taking this from a relationship standpoint with Kiro is also new to this type of attraction, would certainly be able to see Shay as potential rival.
So Reina just basically said she’s interested in Kiro and or considers them to be presently in a relationship. After all, what else is it supposed to mean comparing Kiro to Archie. I can’t believe Kiro wouldn’t catch the meaning here, especially since Kiro already seemed to imply before that she knew what Reina needed. Also Kiro compared herself to Archie.
So did the two sort of hook up at some point off screen? Reina is being pretty blatant now about interest.
Whoever called Reina having a crush on Kiro was dead right.
Best spin I see coming out of this is that they make that deal to get help finding Ben to remove the competition.
I continue to be impressed with the writing for Reina’s character. It is so common for people with hard home lives to have attachment and anxiety issues, and their being portrayed really well here, neither excusing Reina’s behavior nor denying the reality of her situation. As someone who has had similar mental health struggles, I really feel this and Ihope she can get some development and grow into a more complete person as the story progresses!
Kiro definitely caught the meaning. She did a similar thing herself back on chapter 9, page 28.
My takeaway is that they were pretty openly flirting (ambiguous whether Kiro was actually interested or just playing politics), and Reina feels more rejected than dumped. The only really unusual thing is that she’s open about it, which I think is just her filter failing due to stress and depression.
Reina’s jealousy and insecurity are gonna be the death of her. Possibly in a literal sense, considering the situation. It would be in everyone’s best interest if Kiro or anyone, really, was able to help her work through these issues, but I’m a bit at a loss where they would start going about it. Which just makes me all the more curious to see where this goes.
That last panel’s really cute despite the mood. Reina just looks melodramatic and Kiro’s like “are you done yet?”
