9.39 Transcript
Shay: Reina’s a proud person. I still remember her coming down from the ship. Straight out of wherever cool people come from. (The contrast with Archie also helped.) But she was jealous, and that destroyed her.
Shay: She especially didn’t like it when A made friends with a certain very uncool girl. She thought she was losing him and grew increasingly desperate.
Shay: Up to the point of Daisy’s infamous haircut…
Shay: Daisy had always been a lone wolf but it was because of Reina that really pushed her into the wilderness. Even before getting banished, she did all she could to avoid Reina.
So, Reina sabotaged Daisy’s hair and Daisy decided to go the rest of the way to even it out? And has had time to regrow at least 8 inches and age out of acne since then. This foray into camp politics will end badly whenever Daisy and A resurface.
It really is less and less of a wonder why she’s so unpopular. I feel for her with her home life, but it seems she has a pretty self-serving memory of her problems with other people, if she’s not outright being dishonest, considering the disconnect between this account and what she told Kiro.
It might be freckles and not acne, but either way she grew out of them.
Can I just say that Reina is a fascinating and complex character? She’s so deeply flawed, yet has so much potential. Also, she and Kiro are perfect foils for each other: Kiro appears meek and small but is actually highly competent and self-assured, whereas Reina puts up a front of confidence and “coolness” but is actually deeply insecure and unstable. Good writing!
There’s a Chinese parable. I’m leaving out alot of detail.
A phoenix only eats bamboo shoots and fresh water. A hawk sees a dead rat lying on the group and squawks at it trying to chase it away.
(Moral of the story, in case it went over your head: people don’t necessarily want what “everyone” wants)
Reina’s flaws have been laid bare before her confidant and political associate. Meanwhile, the truth behind Daisy’s banishment is also exposed. I wonder how this will make Kiro’s future dealings with the camp president ever more important?
