Kechika: You’re certainly not like the others before you.
Kiro: I was adopted. You know that.
Kechika: Pish-posh… you think blood relations are all that makes you family?
Kiro: Who knows, but I suppose your curse doesn’t care, then?
Kiro: I didn’t get to ask last time, but who is this mother of yours?
Kiro: Kechika?
Kechika: Not like a parent, I suppose. We were once one and the same.
Ooh, paydirt Kiro. Now you’re getting somewhere.
That’s an interesting point. Is this curse based on blood relation or simply the family name? If one is married or adopted into it, does it count?
Maybe there’s an assumption of guilt by association, like you’re part of this family so you must abide by their crimes or something. We all know that’s not necessarily true but maybe it’s a lesson that Kechika hasn’t learned yet and in her folly, she didn’t consider that when she put the curse in place.
If I was in Kechika’s place, I’d say that guilt by association is much stronger than just blood relation… bonds between foster children/parents, and heck, between good friends, even with pets, can be just as strong if not stronger than this silly genetics thing
But I am not a land spirit so who knows? Just gotta wait and see
Yay, exposition 🙂
So Kechika budded from the original spirit? Or was it more like a personality split?
That conjures up an amusing thought. Maybe she did come from a tree?
Kechika’s ears are rounded in the final panel. Is this a mistake in the art, or a subtle indicator of . . . something? It’s hard to say what it could be. Kechika becomes more humanlike as she spends time around humans, perhaps?
Nice catch. I swear I’ve looked at that panel multiple times and something seemed off, I just couldn’t place what! Then again, that’s an interesting idea too.
