[6.43] Positive economic asset
***Update for 8/13: Today’s update will be posted around 6 pm PST. Sorry for the delay!***
Kiro’s actually pretty good at video games.
6.43 Transcript
Kiro: Still, I’m hurt that you would go digging in my personal secrets.
A: How was I supposed to know if you were even real? It could’ve been a character made up by some bored camper.
Kiro: Who even knows that kind of stuff about me? My internet provider?
A: The important question, is why are you here? You being here puts everyone in danger. If Mom knew about the curse, the last thing she wants is to trigger it and kill everyone. Aside from that, you have no gaming ability and there’s no point in running a scam like yours here, anyhow. You’re not a positive economic asset.
Kiro: “No gaming ability?” You wanna go?
Ha!
The “You wanna go?!” is kinda my default.
I’d like to think that I’m… wise? clever? enough to not default to that now, but at the same time… I remember how I used to be, and when tired, or hiding angry, how easily twenty year old default behaviors might sometimes pop out unexpectedly.
Just because I haven’t been in a fist fight in seven years DOES NOT mean that I’m not ready to go when the moment is right… or wrong for whatever reason.
I still remember the emotions running through me at eighteen through… like 28….29… 35… Yeah, that reaction plays true.
Also, I may have been some degrees of not quite mature much longer than appropriate. I did, however, make up for it by being a master of risk taking (which I kinda expect Daisy is, in this case, and A to a much lesser extent), and clever, in addition to being smart.
Being clever helps a WHOLE LOT in unexpected real life situations, much moreso than being just intelligent.
Kira has the advantage of being clever, or so I interpret.
Oh A. From the look on her face, even Daisy can’t believe you just said all that.
Them’s fightin’ words, A!
Daisy’s expressions are great. Intervening in 3, 2, 1…
I’m guessing Kiro’s parents sent that data to Mom in case it would help against the curse.
David, it also describes Daisy.
It’s so funny 🙂 she can take being the Red Right hand of Doom, but being called a crappy gamer… that’s asking for trouble!
Kiro’s facial expressions are really improving.
Well, what a ride, gone through archives in one go, being in quarantine helps (not my mental health – just kidding a bit here – I am actually quite used to be left to my own devices, electronic preferably – another joke there 😉 – but yeah, I can cope with isolation quite well, it surprised me as well), for the record it is only preventive quarantine due to some COVID cases in our company. Anyways, stay safe and keep up with good work, I really enjoy this one webcomic (and like two hundred others, my RSS reader is quite loaded)
this is a gamer only zone
What is “a scam like yours” referring to? Did I miss something?
@Mendel: It was a variation on ransomware. She distributed malware-infected apps that would lock the victim’s phone after a random length of time, so the apps weren’t the obvious source of the problem. She offered money for the useless phones, which she would then unlock and resell.
It’s becoming increasingly obvious that this is all a very long term and elaborate plan to break the curse. Need someone with the right qualifications for the job? Find a child with occult powers and convince the Dubois to adopt them. And the conspiracy seems bigger than Kiro’s parents or the Institute, They may not even be aware of their involvement. Kechika implied that Kiro’s parents would have wanted to protect her, Kiro’s memories imply they tried to “raise her right” to ensure her survival. And whoever is behind it is ruthless enough to write off a lot of people, even if most of them would be considered irredeemably non-productive. They’ve already expended the crew of the supply ship. So what is it about this place that’s valuable enough to inspire someone to spend years and hundreds of lives to free it from a curse? Unfortunately, Kiro is an unlikely messiah and seems to lack the one skill — charismatic leadership — she’s going to need most. Hopefully she’s a quick study.
“So what is it about this place that’s valuable enough to inspire someone to spend years and hundreds of lives to free it from a curse?” … Aluminum? Most likely some sort of natural resources which are too risky to mine if the curse can hit unexpectedly at any time.
Note that while they are ready to write off a lot of people, they may still ultimately want to PROTECT lives – if noone breaks the curse, it will continue killing indefinitely. Well … until someone kills off whole Dubois family, presumably, but maybe the curse is PROTECTING them …
It is prudent to add that “yours” is a bit misleading, since the scam setup was handed to her. She “just” executed it.
