On the family history section of the adoption paperwork, there was no check box for “history of mysterious disappearances”

[Kiro: Not too long after the Duboises adopted me…]
Kiro’s mom: It’s not fair! … What on earth are we supposed to tell her?
Kiro’s dad: This is the key to her survival.
Kiro’s mom: You mean, the key to improving the odds a child of ours will survive.
Kiro’s dad: We both wanted a kid… We’ve done our research and tried our best.
Kiro’s mom: Yes, but she really would’ve been better off if we left her at the Institute, right?
I just wondered whether the curse would even be noticeable because of how many Duboises there are. If you set the original event to occur roughly at the same time as the Alaska Purchase and set a generation to be 25 years, there are roughly 6 generations to the present day. If everybody in the first 4 Generations has an average of 4 kids who grow old enough to be affected by the curse or have kids on their own, and the last 2 generations have an average of 2 kids, there would be about ~680 direct descendants of the original Dubois in this generation, so the risk of dying from the curse would be 1 in 680, or roughly 6.5 times the risk of dying in a car crash in Montana.
I think the curse would only really be noticeable during the first 3 generations, as after that, two deaths would be so far apart in the family tree that one side might not even know somebody has died.
But I might just be overthinking this, and the curse might be a family secret that is passed on regardless of how close the last death was, thereby preserving the knowledge.
All in all, I really enjoy this webcomic, thanks for making it 🙂
P.S.: From a European perspective, is was really surprised just how short American history is.
That was a conversation they should have settled BEFORE they adopted her. ><
“Kiro’s mom: It’s not fair!”
Thanks for the transcript, I wouldn’t have known otherwise.
(Also, the second yellow bubble is missing.)
I mean, if the curse kills people, there are probably less descendants than there would be on average. But still, I wouldn’t notice when someone died whose common ancestor with me is more than 4 generations removed.
“We’ve done our research and tried our best.” Did they think an adopted child wouldn’t count? But then how could they have found out they were wrong before Kiro got shipped off?
I guess staying unmarried and having the non-Dubois parent adopt her would have been too much shenanigans. Maybe they’re keen on breaking the curse…
I like going back and forth between the first two drawings to look at the art changes to show the different ages. File under “things I would never know how to do.”
