Kiro: I see it now, look!
Daisy: Well, it’s exactly where you said it was… That’s a lot of bears, wonder what they’re after?
Kiro: Um, Daisy, you’re headed straight for –
Surf’s up! Oh, wait–that’w not good for boats, is it?
Why is Daisy holding a rope to the mast? And letting the boom hang loose? That’s a weird sailboat…
It also appears that the sail is being blown in the wrong direction, and I’m not sure where the rudder is.
I’m guessing the crew got eaten by the forces of nature…
Wouldn’t that mean that the curse would have taken hold completely, as there would already be a dozen or two deaths before the end of winter?
As a person with some sailing experience and an irrational urge to help out an artist who is trying on tricky material….
We can’t see all the lines on the boat. The boom is probably secured to the center of the boat by a block and tackle and secured. If the winds are unpredictable Daisy may have taken the main stay (the line that pulls the sail up) and uncleated it. The sail will stay up if is a quick release for it, but she would want her hand on in case it started to go.
It is an unusual but not unrealistic response if she is afraid of the wind changing very rapidly, as it would let her drop the entire sail in a matter of seconds. It is not something that would only be done by someone who was conventionally trained, but is something that the self taught might do, or a seasoned sailor who knows the setup is appropriate for the specific circumstance.
Yep,you’ve got the right idea – I had a rudimentary understanding of what Daisy was doing but admittedly got lazy and didn’t draw all the lines. Thanks for pointing it out and it means a lot to me when readers notice the details! Time for me to look at some sailboat diagrams and figure out the proper way to draw it…
I am a few comics behind by the time I saw this, but I am glad I saw what you were going for. I admit I had a moment when it looked really weird, but at a second look I got the whole scenario. I appreciate the commitment to realism. You can’t draw every line or it looks too busy, and the human eye cannot make them out at range. What the human eye tends to notice is the lines that are moving or being handled. Keep On Sereneseal. I like watching artists grow and I really appreciate the bravery it takes to put everything online like this!
Someone on this boat has binoculars! Or someone else is watching… or someone is the bionic man/woman and hasn’t shared this yet!
Kidding! But it looks like things are going to get bad real soon. I wonder if they’ll be able to bear it…
Bear it! XD lol
You could probably start with the American Sailing Association website https://asa.com.
*Dramatic gasp* Kiro has Super Vision!!!
Forget the last favorite character poll, the little bears have won my heart
