Presenting the results of the character poll…
I actually wasn’t expecting Kiro to win, so I was surprised to see her run away with nearly 40% of the vote. Daisy just narrowly beat That Seal with 23% of the vote to take 2nd place. Honorable mention to Kechika.
Thanks for reading.
6.22 Transcript
Kiro: A whirlpool? Wait, that’s the ship that took me here
Kechika: It never made it out.
Kechika: Once you arrived here… the bay closed off. Nobody can enter or leave now.
In regards to the popularity poll, Kiro, being the main character, has had a lot more “screen time” than everyone else, and is by far the most fleshed out character at this point.
I really like Daisy, and considered voting for her, but, ultimately, she hasn’t been a significant part of the plot until quite recently, and so hasn’t gotten nearly as much characterization as Kiro. It will be interesting to see how that changes, and hence, how everyone’s relative popularity changes, as the story progresses.
Also, there is an important distinction to be drawn between a bad person and a good person who has done bad things. None of us are saints, really. Especially no one at this camp.
Apparently, the Curse is pretty hard-core about things…..
@Anony Mouse: I’m fairly sure everyone has done bad things. But I don’t think falling victim to addictive but legal stuff, such as video games or social media or too much coffee, alcohol or tobacco ranks especially high. If you move coffee to the beginning of that list that is my ranking from lesser to worse things.
In a general sense, things that most badly affect your own well-being rather than someone else’s is quite low on the scale of bad things – in my opinion. Ethics is a tricky subject, and addictions maybe especially so. Addictions that are benign in nature or just not that common mostly just affect the individuals that take part and (often but not always I guess) the people closest to the addicted – while addictions that become widespread more often than not prove to be a great problem for the whole society.
I’m interested to see different views and opinions on this! Kiro disabled people’s smartphones (which can be a minor to a disastrous inconvenience, if properly backed up, worse if not) and subsequently added fraud such that the economic impact on the victims was much higher than it should have been – money that she pocketed at least a significant part of. Two bad things! But how bad? Kechiko, IIRC, cursed the Dubois family to repeat their ancestor’s legacy of killing everyone present in this bay (other than himself?) once every generation, for eternity. Endless victims. This is worse, right? As for the rest of the cast, I don’t think we know much if anything about what bad things they have done, but I guess we can speculate. Is Mom doing something just as bad as, or even worse than, what Kiro did?
Well, the ship’s intact, so an SOS definitely went out. The Coast Guard would be along within hours, and with that whirlpool blocking naval access, a bigger cutter with a rescue chopper would be there within a day, two at the most. If something more is needed, the Navy can be persuaded to send a helicopter assault ship along within a week.
It’s REALLY hard to totally isolate an area for extended periods in the age of vertical flight.
So, is everyone on the ship dead? Are they sitting there waiting for rescue? Or does camp have lots of new visitors?
I’m wondering the same thing. They’re probably dead though
@Vulcan: Well, there is magic involved – magic which we don’t know the limits of yet, other than time (no limit) and place (this bay). And we’ve already seen that technology is susceptible to the magic in this world, when the lift took Kiro to see Kechika.
The ship’s intact, yes. And it’s aground well short of the whirlpool – it never got that far. I see what you’re saying, Vulcan, but was there a crew by then? Did the ship ever truly have a crew, or was it … a … crew ……?
Maybe it’s a self-driving ship…
I’m driven to wonder exactly why someone decided to send a bunch of adolescents to a place where everyone who lives there dies. At least three times on record. Internet addiction (it’s bad; we have one in the family) is hardly grounds for a death sentence. Something serious is going on here and “Mom” is in it up to her fat neck.
As you may have guessed from my misplaced replies above, something is wonky with the reply feature, at least for me running the IceCatMobile browser v. 68.4.2 on Android. Those posts ended up where they were showing as I clicked the Post button, it was clicking the Reply link that gave unexpected results. I think I’ve seen this before on another webcomic using the same commenting system, maybe a year ago? Does someone else remember that?
You’re probably right, this website has always been a crappy experience on mobile devices (sorry about this, I meant to rebuild the site this year but now I’m not sure if it can be done). Also, I will probably move to using Disqus at some point – if I can find a way to import 1400+ comments without manually retyping every single one! Hehe!
You might be able to make a custom tool. The disqus API mentions the ability to add comments: https://help.disqus.com/en/articles/1717182-posting-an-sso-comment-via-the-api
That’s horrifying. I’m guessing most people on the ship are dead or should be?
Seems sort of like the Bermuda Triangle. It must have been the style at the time.
“I’m driven to wonder exactly why someone decided to send a bunch of adolescents to a place where everyone who lives there dies”
Really? Given some of the adolescents I know, I quite understand…
Maybe everyone on the ship are ghosts now! Or maybe it’ll just be empty?
Also pretty happy that Kiro won the poll since I selected her too. XD
I hope it’s not Uzumaki curse of Junji Ito
I never vote for winners, sorry Daisy I cursed you.
