Democracies are perfectly capable of electing the wrong people, maybe a bit too capable

Darien: So what? You killed him, Daisy. I think Death Course is an in-adequate punishment! But if you intend to plead not guilty, you better speak now.
Daisy: I’m not talking about me, bonehead.
Daisy: Why is Kiro still involved? Leave her out of this. You think she’ll get through Death Course in one piece?
Darien: That’s for you to determine.
Penny: D, you might want to take a more sympathetic tone if you seek re-election…
Darien: The Banished don’t vote.
Penny: I do.
Kiro: What, when did I get banished?
Darien: You may be if you don’t cooperate.
Very true; just because you can get 51 out 100 people to agree doesn’t prove it’s a good idea.
But if you can prove that something is a good idea, you will be able to get more than 51% to agree.
Your world sounds nice. Can I come live there?
I’ll put it this way:
If most people are against it, it is not a good idea.
Most people have been against ending slavery. Was it a good idea then? Why did it change?
Or in the case of a certain election in 2016… 46 out of 100 is enough!
Buh. You’re not kidding.
I stand by my earlier statement. There’s no way the adults in charge here can afford to let ANY of these kids go home, EVER, after allowing this sort of thing to go down.
Wait, how is Kiro not cooperating? She’s been extremely helpful, even if sometimes unknowingly.
Its not just about electing the wrong people though that is one of the more serious problems. Democracies are prone to doing terrible things because they fall into the trap of thinking having a majority sanctifies any and all actions.
There is an easy remedy for that:
Kill the opposition until you have the majority.
page number… nice
Democracies have the advantage that the wrong people don’t stay elected for long.
With monarchies, once the wrong people are in power, they stay in power.
From what I see, the council is an elective monarchy. The council members are in power to stay in power, and they have each other’s backs. And long knives.
Why they kept demanding something? They already used out Kira almost to death.
I’m surprised that this is in any way a democracy. I was under the impression that the council were largely self-proclaimed rulers. But then again I have probably already forgotten a pgae or two… 😛
