Penny: Because the damn thing nearly killed captain Dubois too when he used it. The chaos that it unleashed… He stayed for weeks in a hut on a mountain, awaiting the chance… until he saw as he called it a rift in the fabric. This spell protected him as the barrier destabilized, allowing him to escape.
Can someone please tell these clueless characters the #1 of the supernatural: NEVER OPEN DOORS IF YOU DON’T KNOW WHERE THEY LEAD!
Or at the very least, have a plan so you (or others) can escape and/or seal the door.

Maybe because that is not the only path to escape.
“we are doomed so lets try something crazy” is one of the traps for character in a semi lovecraftian setting, punishing premature despair with inhibited crazyness instead of pride with straight madness
