If I am reading the dialogue and Penny’s reactions correctly, it sounds like she believes that opening the door has a slight chance of survival, whereas doing nothing would result in certain death for everyone.

But one detail here. Why is the light coming from the pit and what is causing it? As far as we know Mom does not have the journal and she needs it to open the “door.” Knowing this, what can we conclude?
