9.15 Transcript
[Kiro: That’s the date I boarded the ship.]
“348 barrels of hazardous waste to 55º28’02″N, 170º04’50″W.
“Dump at night.
“Vials of flesh-eating bacteria, Be Extremely Careful.
“Little dark-haired girl… to Forgotten Bay, Alaska.”
Kiro: “Forgotten Bay Young Adult Rehabilitation Center.”
Kiro: Why was I being transported on a ship full of illegal cargo?
I expected sea life to have eaten the flesh off Mr. Bones (9.09-9.11), but it seems flesh-eating bacteria are now on the table as well.
Who even dumps these into the sea instead of killing them with bleach or heat? If they’re vials, just put them in the oven/autoclave and bake them. If you have 348 barrels of these, they’ve eaten a LOT of flesh, but I’d still bake them in an industrial oven in a steel mill or something.
Dumping them at sea is cheaper. Except the externalities.
Apparently it’s easier and cheaper to just dump them somewhere and forget about them than dispose of them properly. And bad decisions just seem to congregate here at the camp, so even if they were to be burned someone would have said “Hey, we have this facility in Alaska that’s perfect for that…”
That doesn’t make sense. Running an industrial oven to kill the bacteria should be cheaper than shipping hundreds of barrels for hundreds of miles.
The vials may have been bound for a different location.
Perhaps one day in the future the full version of the ship’s log will be released…
Note: Checking with Google Maps tells me that the Latitude & Longitude mentioned is in the Bering Sea. While my impression is that the Forgotten Bay Camp is in the Alaska Panhandle. If the ship started from the west coast of the lower 48 states of the US, the dump site would be reached *after* the camp. So the hazardous waste should still be on the ship.
It looks like Mom isn’t the only one with a side hustle….
Wouldn’t she have arrived on the same ship that supplied the camp with food and therefore would now no longer have a big store of food? And so this would be a differdnt ship?
Well, that makes some sense. Mr Bones’s skeletonization seemed completely implausibe before. Sad, though, that the crew were punished for the crimes of their employer (unless the dumping is a private venture of the officers – but then why’d it be in the log)?
Unless of course they it was meant to handily dispose of a collection of troublesome miscreants?
Also, I take it from this that Mr. Bones may actually still be among the living. Sort of. Yech.
Well, that makes a lot more sense why Mr. Bones is the way he is… but that just makes me even more afraid for all these kids. Especially Ben, who they still haven’t found yet…
Well, I don’t think I feel all that sorry for the crew now.
I assumed that the barrels of hazardous waste and the vials of flesh eating bacteria were two separate items. I looked up the listed coordinates on Google Earth and they appear to be just off the continental shelf with a depth of about 9300 feet. It is about 150 miles from the nearest land, which is one of the Aleutian Islands. A simple way to get rid of the vials might be to put them in a barrel of carbolic acid and dump the barrel overboard at that location. However, if a criminal organization wanted to do illegal dumping, there would seem to be a lot of locations that are easier to get to. Of course, it could be that the hazardous waste was dead bodies that they don’t want to have found. The location looks good for that.
Yeah, ddon’t forget, it makes a lot of sense if your more a Parasitical Pirate than a responsible business owner.
More so when the vehicle being used and the freight cost is already paid for by somebody else.
Also bear in mind it’s carrying more than one illicit Cargo, so anymore the ship’s Captain can stuff into the Freight Bay, is then cream on top of his current illicit earnings.
From the beginning of recorded history, it’s always been Ignorance, Greed and Stupidity that has shaped human history.
Shakespeare, every cultures historical writings, and the Bible all document this tendency very well.
Don’t forget she, A, and likely others were conned into getting caught. Would it really surprise you to find out the entire establishment was dirty.
That’s an awfully precise location in the Bering Sea, given that at that latitude. one second of longitude is less than 20m. Which is less than the length of the ship! And one second of latitude is a little over 30m at any longitude.
Given that there’s absolutely nothing there! Sort of at the junction of two undersea canyons…
Even the manifest is mocking Kiro’s size.
I have to say that the ships log is refreshingly clear given the nature of their business. I would have expected some euphemisms in there.
