Kiro: So what was in that diary that was apparently worth getting “killed and eaten” for?
Daisy: Just a bunch of superstitious nonsense
A: Hey!
A: The diary belonged to a fur trader whose party massacred an entire village where the camp is today. Months later, he wrote of a vision he had.
A: A winged woman appeared to him at the top of Sky Knife. She told him this place would be curse for as long as he and his descendants lived.
Kiro: Cursed to what?
A: So that any people who come here end up killing each other.
Fascinating creature! And looks of course very much like an eagle to look out for.
Then the obvious question is…. Who are the descendents? Now that is food for thought. It would be a bummer if they lived happily in New York or California, unaware of everything, and was not introduced at all in this comic. 😀
Yet another unfortunate reality of colonialism: feeling unwarranted guilt for what great-grandpa did, long ago 😐
I’m mixed breed, and Aspergers, and I can say with confidence that there is vastly less racism, sexism against my race and discrimination against autists in the West than in Hong Kong and Asia (although to a lesser extent along the westernized Pacific Rim there is much less discrimination thanks to the western influence) than there is anywhere else in the world. And as far as history goes, the West went softer on the parts of Earth they conquered than other empires did in the past, and banned slavery and introduced humanism that none of those other empires did (some large polities, like the Jainists were more peaceful, but that’s exceedingly rare).
Westerners have guilt tripped themselves, made themselves seem like villains and infantilized their minorities by telling them they can’t succeed (my Chinese people (I’m a Hong Konger, not Chinese, but close enough) are doing even better than whites in America, and for a long time the worst thing you could on the railroad in the West was be a Chinaman. This doesn’t mean it isn’t hard to be a minority in the US and other countries, but policies to redress issues should be color blind and aimed at low-something or other groups without blaming one group and telling the other groups they’re victims, that’s why we’re moving towards racial conflict after improving for so long).
Essentially you’ve given the rest of the world, which is far more sexist and racist, a giant stick to beat you over with for as long as they wish, even tho we have old school slavery in Mauritania, the Gulf States and North Korea.
And colonialism? The history of colonialism as I pointed out was less violent than other people’s periods of military and sociological dominance, there were less genocides (such as North and Central America), less disruption of peoples (such as in India), and less atrocities (such as in Belgian Congo), and a liberal international order was built up by the British and American, allowing for unprecedented prosperity and the spread of democratic and eventual human rights ideals.
Africa and the other colonized continents have sociologically (institutions, etc), technologically, economically, in terms of health and life expectancy and HDI been on an arrow straight up, with the only major exceptions being India and the few areas that did see genocides, and colonies in Africa were seeing more and more rights as metropolitan citizens (especially the Portuguese colonies), and citizens and democratic reforms were under way, all until the Advent of decolonization and the brutal introduction of armed communism.
Looking at all the statistics, Africa was a Stone age society before that, with a fair amount of outright cannibalism in the dense jungle parts of the center, same as Papua New Guinea, and it went straight up until colonialism ended and the West was forced away. Since then public opinion has left western corporations to get ripped off and forced them to forgive debt, and thus investments have been limited unlike in responsible colonies, until China came in and they finally found someone they couldn’t defraud. And as evil as China has been, that fiscal discipline has forced Africa, and other developing countries to grow further, but on much harsher terms of they had simply worked with the West and Pacific Rim allies.
This was a rather major rant, but the TLDR is that the West brought upon the World a Golden Age, and yet its children have been told that their ancestors were horrible, using the values they started, by countries and people (many of them people from such humanist countries themselves) who have taken the ideology of being anti-authority and doubting your own people to the logical extreme, such that now other countries abuse you with the stick you gave them, while asking for it.
Objectively speaking, the West has done more for the world and done less damage, you’re just blaming yourself and being blamed for having been powerful despite literally inventing the humanist value system that the powerful should be constantly criticized.
It’s not for nothing that outside the cultural sphere of the West and it’s allies these values are quite weak.
Westerners should be proud of their heritage, and still know that what matters is the individual.
Anyway, if people continue to blame people for their ancestors, who did a lot of good and a lot of bad you get this kind of culture: https://quillette.com/2018/08/18/the-forgotten-story-of-how-punching-up-harmed-the-science-fiction-fantasy-world/
Please read beyond the first page, there’s a psychopath who got away with destroying several online science fiction communities, getting authors to retire and some people to try to kill themselves by blaming any and all victims for being white (despite the fact a lot of them weren’t), and they largely got away with it because people felt they couldn’t criticize her.
As a follow up I suggest reading up on the history of countries and continents and historical GDP, HDI, population, life expectancy of various continents, and also such things as the Islamic invasion of India (the greatest genocide in history), the Mongol Empire (and how even that brutal empire and it’s successors improved the flow of technology) etc,
My point in the main post is that the Western Empires not only brought a the greatest Golden Age the world has ever seen, it did it with less atrocities than other empires of the past, and even developed a liberal globalist and eventually humanist philosophies that led to not only banning slavery, but enforcing it through the world.
The idea that the West destroyed the world is essentially extremist propaganda by far left people who want to blame the West for everything, an ideology that lost impetus with the fall of the Iron Curtain when we found out they were actually the liars and it was liberal democracies that were pushing good, but since then it’s gotten back to accelerating. From a historical and sociological point of view the advances were greater, the collateral was less and attempts at being nicer to each other, and even those outside our tribes were started.
To be sure, the West too mostly just cared about itself, but the amount it cared about the rest of the world, especially towards it’s late dominance in the 1700s to the present day has been unprecedented, whether for minorities or external countries. And the benefits have been unparalleled in history.
Incredible drawing of the winged messenger! In particular…
– Wings only, not wings + arms
– Clothing that becomes both the lower body and tail of the bird form
– Talons, not feet
Thanks! I’m looking forward to introducing her. (now when will that be? who knows…)
Kinda looks the what the sky elves in the dragon prince can do. Still amazing artwork
Yes, I really look forward to that!
Huh, guess that might explain the death course. Thought it was a bit extreme, but if the lands cursed for people to want to kill each other…
